Academics and Sports in Chandigarh
ACADEMICS

Chandigarh was built not only to provide
new homes to individuals uprooted by partition but also to provide a home to
institutions which had been forced to relocate. Chief among these were the Panjab University, the Punjab Engineering College and
the Government College of Arts. Among the new teaching and research
institutions established in Chandigarh in the decade of the 1960s is the
Postgraduate institution of Medical Education and Research and College of
Architecture. These are the institutions of nationwide reputation.Over the
past four decades many more such specialised institutions have been located
here, giving the city a base of highly educated manpower, which will enable
it to move rapidly into the information age.
Educational Institutions
Here is the brief sketch of the city's premier institutions of Higher
Education :
 |
Panjab University |
Sector 14 |
|
|
An affiliating and teaching university, the Panjab
University was incorporated in 1882 of Lahore. The assts and staff of
this half century old Institution were divided in 1947. Those opting for
India initially migrated to Shimla, and shifted in 1956, to the campus
at Chandigarh.
The Panjab University offers degree and diploma course in the Arts,
Science, Commerce, Business Management, Design and Fine Arts, Music,
Theater, Education, Engineering and Technology, Languages, Law and

Post Graduate Institute
of Medical Education & Research (PGI) |
Sector 12 |
|
|
Before 1947 the present state of Punjab had very
poor medical facilities and teaching institution of Medical Education,
the King Edward Medical College and Hospital was based at Lahore. The
creation of PGI at Chandigarh solved two problems: it resettled a large
number of doctors and it gave Punjab the kind of medical college and
hospital it lacked. This central government institution spreads over 157
acres of area in sector 12. It is one of the most modern and prestigious
medical institutions in north India.

 |
Government Medical College |
Sector 32 |
|
|
Before 1991, the youth of Chandigarh could prepare
careers in engineering, architecture, law, humanities, and fine arts,
the sciences and even pharmacy
..virtually everything, except medicine.
The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research was
emerging as an advance center of medical learning at the post graduate
level. To study medicine at the undergraduate level, students from
Chandigarh sought admission to colleges outside the city. The
establishment of a medical college at Chandigarh was a long felt need of
the citizens of Chandigarh. Both the PGI and The General Hospital sector
16 were located in the northern sectors of the city. Another hospital
located in a southern sector would serve more comprehensiveely, the
health care requirements of the growing city.
The Government Medical College and Hospital, sector 32, meets this
long standing demand and also serves to augment the existing health
care infra structure in Chandigarh. Spread over 36 acres its buildings
are at different stages of completion.
